We caught up with NARPM® Pacific and Pacific Islands RVP, Tim Wehner, MPM® RMP®, who is the Vice President of Dodson Property Management, CRMC®, to find out what NARPM Education has done for him as a property manager and for his property management business. Here is his #NARPMSmart story in his words.

“Dodson Property Management was started in 2007 by Duke Dodson, MPM® RMP®. We currently manage about 1,500 single-family homes and small multi-family properties.

“NARPM® Education changed Dodson Property Management in every way you can possibly imagine — from the way we structure our company to the way we handle our portfolios. As soon as we got back from our first NARPM® Convention, after taking a couple of designation classes and some awesome breakout sessions, we totally changed the way we did business. We changed our business development routine. We changed our structure.

“Designations have really impacted the way we do business. I think our clients have a greater appreciation for what we are doing as a business because they see that we are not only managing their properties effectively, but also we’re going out and trying to learn more and can provide more value.

“I’ve earned the RMP® Designation and MPM® Designation. I also guided Dodson Property Management through our Certified Residential Management Company Designation (CRMC®). All of them were valuable.

“As my role in Dodson Property Management has progressed, I think I’ve found my MPM® the most valuable. I took great classes and met great people while I was doing it. It also helped me gain the confidence in myself that I belong in this industry and that I can be a leader in the industry.

“Then as a business leader, the CRMC® was a phenomenal exercise to go through. Not only did it help us gain confidence in what we were doing as an organization, but it also allowed us to review all of our policies and procedures.

“I think #NARPMSmart is important not only for business leaders to get involved in, but if you have employees — whether it’s one or 100 — get them involved. #NARPMSmart can’t be just one person giving the information down to your employees. You have to get everybody involved.

“Whether you’re going after your Certified Residential Management Bookkeeper (CRMB) Designation, your Certified Support Specialist (CSS®) Designation, your Certified Maintenance Coordinator (CMC) Designation, all of those are important. They provide value to you as a business leader and provide great development opportunities for your employees. Also, it gives you an opportunity to sell what you’re doing for your employees and to better your business to your potential clients.

“#NARPMSmart to me really is all encompassing of what NARPM® is — its volunteerism, its education, its bettering the property management industry. That’s what’s really important to me — raising the bar in this industry.

“I think volunteerism and education both being part of the designation process is important because you learn so much about yourself and the people that are around you. That’s what really completes you as someone who can make an impact in this business.”
