The House Financial Services Committee has approved the Respect State Housing Laws Act on a 29-22 vote. This legislation, a NARPM priority sponsored by Representative Barry Loudermilk (GA) and cosponsored by fifty additional House members, including the lead Democrat on the legislation, Representative Vicente Gonzalez (TX), would repeal the CARES Act 30-day Notice to Vacate. This is a significant step forward for this bill.
Here is the committee discussion of the bill:
The markup contained numerous other pieces of legislation. One of those was the bipartisan Housing for the 21st Century Act. This legislation was based on input from a number of stakeholders, including NARPM, about the need to expand housing supply in order to assure housing affordability for American families. In addition, the committee approved the NFIP Extension Act of 2026, which provides for an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program through September 30, 2026.
Attention now turns to moving this legislation to the House floor as well as reconciling the Housing for the 21st Century Act with the Senate-approved ROAD to Housing Act.
